Firstly, if you have any problems or questions that are not answered here, read
YNZC
Service Additional Information then see or email
Miss Roper our
YNZC@HVHS Service Co-ordinator.
How Long?
For Bronze Level you must follow
a service regularly for 3 (or 6) months. You should get some sort of
training from your supervisor. Remember, you are supposed to get
something out of this experience as well...
Who should I
get for my supervisor?
You need to have a supervisor to help and guide you in the work. The
supervisor will also sign your white attendance sheet and YNZC book (the
little one) when you finish your 3 (or 6) months. Remember to keep
updating your diary (your 1B5 book). You don't need to write pages and
pages, but each time that you do a service write some comments on how it
went. Take some photos if you want – We are always interested to see what
you are doing.
We
don't want you to be 'exploited' so...
You cannot usually do
service for your family - eg. baby sitting, gardening, cleaning toilets
etc... You should be doing this anyway!!!
You cannot usually work
for a business - they should pay you. If the organisation is not
voluntary, you shouldn't have to work for free. Obviously, some good
organisations like the SPCA have paid workers so check with Miss Roper if
you are not sure.

Other ideas
include:
 | Local environmental
groups eg KEG -Korokoro Environmental Group and other community groups -
often have days when they clean up the local area. |
 | Helping an elderly or
disabled neighbour - eg. mowing lawns, making cups of tea and having a
chat. A few students did this last year and they had a very nice time.
Ask mum or dad - there is bound to be someone locally who would like a
bit of company. |
 | Coaching - can you
coach a primary school sports team? |
 | First Aid Course -
this can be a service if you plan to use it for a group you are involved
with. Eg. be the first aider for your sports team or club. |
 | A group of you could
get together to organise a fund-raiser for a charity of your
choice.
This will probably take 3 months to organise and run. If you do this -
see Miss Roper first and we will need a parent or other responsible
adult to closely supervise you. |
 | School service -
mediation, civil defence, library, canteen.... |
 | Contact your local
church or other faith groups. They often need volunteers for food banks,
for example. |
There are lots of things
that you can do. But, I understand that it can be difficult to get started
if you haven't done this before. Ask some adults that you know. Show this
page to your parents and have a chat, they may know something or somebody.
The city council information desk can sometimes be helpful.
